On this episode of 'Check a Pro Joe', we dive into the essential topic of finding quality contractors for any home improvement tasks. Our esteemed guest for this talk is Mike Gidich of Honeydude's Handyman, who is here to discuss the crucial aspect of contractor insurance. This is one of the critical factors to consider while hiring professionals for your home.
Many homeowners might be tempted to hire an uninsured contractor offering services at lower prices. However, insurance is what puts us in a bubble that protects you and your home. Mike emphasizes the danger of hiring uninsured contractors. Any accidents or damage that occur during the job may end up falling on the homeowner's insurance. It is not just about being insured; it's about having the appropriate insurance.
Mike illustrates this with an example, showing how insufficient coverage could leave homeowners responsible for any additional cost. It is significant to know what insurance really means and ensure that contractors are adequately insured. Any reputable company should carry at least a million dollars in liability insurance. And it is absolutely fine for homeowners to ask the contractors for certificates of insurances.
The last thing any homeowner wants is a legal battle ensuing from an accident during a home repair. Mike and his team are insured professionals from Honeydude's Handyman who are pre-qualified at Checker Pro. Protect yourself by hiring insured contractors and save yourself from unforeseen complications.
Handyman expert, Mike Gidich from Honey Dudes, answers this question on the program today - "Mike, what is your Why? Why do you do what you do for the homeowner?"

As technology continues to revolutionize our lives, its application has gone beyond our immediate living spaces to even extending to our garage doors. This podcast episode exposes us to the wonders of the MyQ system, a technological upgrade to your garage door system. The host is joined by Cody Johnson from Garage Door Doctor to discuss the numerous advantages of the MyQ system and how you can make it part of your everyday home automation.
MyQ is a WiFi-integrated system that connects your garage door to your home's internet, enabling control over your garage door from anywhere across the globe. With a simple application, you can open and close your garage door remotely and even alert you when your door opens or closes. This feature comes in handy for various scenarios like lending access to neighbors, controlling access for Airbnb guests, or monitoring activities in your garage, among other things.
Interestingly, there is more to the MyQ system than controlling your door's opening and closing. The MyQ system builds in security aspects, providing an HD camera with a two-way microphone for live streaming and recording. What's more, the system ensures a secure delivery of packages, counteracting porch pirating incidents.
Upgrading to a MyQ system infuses your garage door with smart features, making it safer, quieter, smoother, and more energy-efficient than conventional garage doors.
To know more about the MyQ system, explore the description section of this podcast. You can connect with Cody and his team of expert technicians and advisors to help incorporate a modern touch to your garage door.
As we embrace automation and technology in our homes, the value of integrating these enhancements to portions of our homes like the garage becomes undeniable. Many us frequently and variably use the garage as an alternative entrance to our homes, storage space, and even our children’s playground. Upgrading to the MyQ system, therefore, simply makes sense.

In this episode, we tackle a frequently asked question – how often should you replace the filters in your HVAC system? I'm joined by Gareth Kelly, an expert from Dream Team Plumbing, Electrical, Heating, and Cooling, to provide valuable insight into this vital aspect of home maintenance.
While many homeowners tend to overlook filter replacements as long as their air conditioning and heating systems are working, Gareth emphasizes the need for regular upkeep. Most people are familiar with the standard one-inch filters, which are readily available at home improvement stores. He recommends that these filters be swapped out every one to three months. On the other hand, larger three or four-inch filters, which are more efficient at collecting dust and allergens, can last between six to nine months. Still, their condition should be inspected every three months.
Gareth points out that neglecting to replace filters can lead to unnecessarily high energy bills. A blocked filter can make the furnace work harder, leading to longer heating and cooling times, thereby costing homeowners more money. This extra effort can potentially shorten the lifespan of the whole system, leading to expensive repairs or even complete replacement needs.
In conclusion, maintaining your heating and cooling system includes replacing your air filters at least twice a year, if not quarterly. If unsure of the process, it's best to call in professionals like Gareth and his team at Dream Team.
All of Gareth's contact information can be found in the description of this podcast. We thank him for sharing his expertise on this topic.

Welcome to the Check A Pro Radio Show, hosted by Joe. In this episode, we conversed with Nathan Shafer, an indoor quality expert who deeply cares about our homes' health or environment. We delved into how to improve indoor air quality and why it should be a priority.
In the past, homes were not as air-tight as they are today. Our longings for efficiency and comfort have led to building homes that are better insulated and more sealed, limiting the amount of fresh air entering our homes. This change, while providing benefits, also created challenges in maintaining indoor air quality. It has made indoor air quality more critical for the health of our homes and families.
One important factor we discussed was humidity - or lack thereof. As heating systems run during the colder months, in-home air starts to dry. This lack of humidity alters our comfort and requires adjusting the thermostat. Moreover, the dry air also affects our personal health, particularly when germs start to set in. That's why it's important to control and maintain optimum humidity levels.
Beyond humidity, the episode also tackles from the importance of proper air filtration systems to air purifiers that bring the technology of the outdoors inside the home. Lastly, we discussed the need to introduce fresh air into air-tight houses, effectively putting the house under positive pressure.
We summarized some steps to improve indoor air quality - controlling humidity, installing better air filtration systems or air purifiers, and maintaining ventilation. By following these, we can keep our homes comfortable and healthy, and help our families thrive.
